One photo from the Howard Greenberg
Gallery that I found to be quite interesting was “Bathing Beach Before the Thunderstorm” by Martin
Munkacsi. Without even looking at the
date, it is obvious that the photo was taken many years ago because of the type
of bathing suits that the people in the photo are wearing. In the photo it looks like a storm is
approaching, the sky is dark and cloudy and the ocean is very rough. One thing that stood out to me in this
picture is that even though there is a storm coming, the people are still in
the ocean and some of them even look like they are rejoicing by splashing
around and throwing their arms in the air.
This seems ironic to me; I live near the beach and whenever a storm is
coming there are never people in the ocean and even if there were, the
lifeguards would call them out immediately.
This photo also seems to be taken from a distant and somewhat high
viewpoint which makes for an interesting angle. I also think it is interesting
that he chose to have almost 2/3 of the focus on the sky rather than the beach
and people below him. Overall I found
this to be a very eye-catching piece.
Ok its ironic that people are in the water with a storm coming, any other meaning to the picture then just irony? people's relationship to nature? power of nature?
